This year, Smithsonian Day is September 22, 2018 and St. Joseph, Missouri has tons of spots for you to celebrate! In case you’re unfamiliar with this national holiday, it’s a day where you can gain free admission to museums. Be advised, not all museums participate; it’s at their discretion. Here’s more about the top seven places to celebrate in St. Joseph.

1. Pony Express National Museum

The Pony Express National Museum is the perfect place for you if you’ve ever had an interest in the Wild West, Westward Expansion, or the Pony Express. Learn about how our country changed during Westward Expansion, and travel through time as you get a glimpse into the life of a Pony Express rider.

2. Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art

Located in one of St. Joseph’s old mansions, the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art offers a variety of paintings, photographs, and statues nestled amongst the unique architecture of this grand house. Make sure to visit all the floors of this museum, including the lower level which often features special exhibits. 3. Remington Nature Center

Located on the banks of the Missouri River, the Remington Nature Center is the perfect spot for a nature museum. Come to feed the fish, watch the river, or learn about northwest Missouri and its wildlife. No matter why you’re there, you’re sure to enjoy your time.

4. Robidoux Row Museum

If you want to learn specifically about the history of St. Joseph, Robidoux Row is a great place to start. Once Joseph Robidoux founded St. Joseph, he created apartments to house those who were building their homes. These apartments, which were built around 1840, are the location for this museum devoted to shining a light on life in the mid-1800s. 5. Glore Psychiatric Museum

Glore Psychiatric Museum is truly one of its kind. This informative tribute to the progress in mental health treatment is actually housed in the building that once was St. Joseph State Hospital, the second state mental hospital in Missouri. One of my favorite parts of this museum is learning about the life of and rules for nurses when the hospital opened in 1874. 6. St. Joseph Museum

Located next door to the Glore Psychiatric Museum, the St. Joseph Museum is best known for housing the Black Archives Museum. In addition to learning about the lives of black people in northwest Missouri, you can also learn about the development of the area. 7. Walter Cronkite Memorial

Walter Cronkite, one of the most famous and trusted newscasters in the past century, was born and raised in St. Joseph. Find the Walter Cronkite Memorial on the Missouri Western State University campus. It includes a replica of his 1970s newsroom, a TV display, and information about NASA’s space exploration.
